Last September we gained a new recruit - Will Bainbridge - as part of Sheffield University’s Year in Industry programme. He’d missed out on another placement and needed somewhere last minute and wow are we glad to have snagged him! Over the last 12 months he’s helped refine, redesign and restore more than a couple of key products, he’s always gone above and beyond when asked to design a solution, and just been great company. Unfortunately for us he’s headed back to Uni to finish his degree and lead the Railway Challenge team to (most likely) victory in 2027. Good luck in all future endeavours and hopefully we’ll see you back at Rivelin Rail HQ soon.

We’re big fans of a little dance, so when Dom Whiting’s Drum And Bass On The Bike tour came to Sheffield, we were ecstatic that it passed right by our HQ! It’s so lovely to know that over 1500 raving cyclists saw our fantastic Kickrocks sign on Burton Road. What a rare treat that was.

On another (unprecedented) scorching hot day, we visited British Steel in Scunthorpe, in collaboration with The University of Sheffield. Following on from our work with Ernest Wright, we tested the viability of a range of different wheel materials, under the close scrutiny of the University research team.

Developing a rail specific portable tribometer isn't just about measuring friction, it's about simulating the wheel-rail contact as closely as possible whilst maintaining repeatability of measurements.

Our tribometers use a small steel measurement wheel that is loaded against the rail and rolled along its surface. To produce representative measurements, the measurement wheel has to behave like a real train wheel. That means carefully considering the steel grade, hardness and dive into the rabbit hole that is surface roughness. We also need to understand how those properties change throughout the wheel's life through wear and oxidation.

Another challenge is that one of the main applications for our tribometers is inspecting and optimising friction management systems that use oil, grease or solid lubricants. The measurement wheel therefore needs to be cleaned quickly and effectively between tests, without altering its surface properties.

We're currently working on a project with South Yorkshire Innovation ProgrammeSouth Yorkshire Innovation Programme and Mechanical Engineering, University of Sheffieldto optimise every aspect of the measurement wheel, from material selection and manufacturing through to polishing and surface conditioning.

One of the best parts of developing hardware in Sheffield is being able to draw on generations of engineering expertise. Recently we had the opportunity to visit Ernest Wright, who have been handcrafting world-renowned scissors in Sheffield since 1902.

Their team shared their decades of experience in steel finishing and polishing to aid our manufacturing process. It was also a fantastic opportunity to see traditional Sheffield craftsmanship still thriving today. A huge thank you to Neil and everyone at Ernest Wright for the warm welcome and insights into surface conditioning.

In-person training & operational data collection

Zurich recently involved collection of baseline data to understand top-of-rail friction management systems on a grooved rail. This data will be used for condition-based optimisation of friction management. The company involved are developing smart lubrication systems and will be using our tribometers to asses the ongoing work and for in-person training, alongside the data collection.

Adhesion investigation, Paris

Ben has been travelling all over recently. He’s been consulting on rail conditions after a number of friction issues recently in a tunnel in Paris. The variability of friction over 3km of rail was measured and it was discovered that flange grease was being transferred to the top of the rail. The rail was cleaned and friction measurements were taken to establish wether the site was now not at risk of further adhesion incidents. Long shifts on the line were soothed by a return to wonderful summer weather above ground.

Railway Challenge

We’ve been lucky to have Will Bainbridge at Rivelin Rail as a ‘year in industry’ student since October. His work on making this tribometer the best version yet (by far) has been invaluable. When he’s not spinning shapes around in CAD or running miles of filament through our Bambu labs 3D printer, he’s been working with the Sheffield University Railway Challenge team. The powertrain he developed last year became part of this years entry at the recent competition down in Melton Mowbray. We’re super proud to say that the team scored second place in a heady battle with 9 other International crews. Massive congratulations from all of us at Rivelin Rail, and to all the other competitors. It sounded like a very fun weekend.

The annual “sea of orange jackets” Rail live show was not a disappointment.

We easily racked up our 10,000 steps visiting some current suppliers and future ones. Luckily the kind folks at LB Foster provided us with some breakfast ice-cream to set us up for the day. If you’re keen to see some very heavy machinery and some great new tech on offer then make sure you book in for the next one. Bring the comfy shoes!

Operational friction testing of low adhesion mitigation methods

This is the beginning of a more data-driven approach to friction management strategies. For further information or future work please get in touch.

Over £80 million pounds per year is spent on rail cleaning.

Despite this, very little information is known about performance. ‘Trial and error’ is used alongside ‘one size fits all’ cleaning strategies.

Ben conducted 11 days of friction measurements over 6 different locations, to determine the performance analysis of four different types of friction management products including water jetting, traction gels, and chemical cleaners.

Benefits to railway operation of friction measurements include:

  • Understanding of cleaning performance under different contamination, environmental and traffic conditions

  • Optimisation of cleaning strategy including location, speed or power and application intervals

  • Understanding of potential adhesion risks when using products and recommended mitigations

  • Friction ‘library; or database to compare against for future operational and investigative measurements

Our tribometer has been included in Rail Safety and Standards board protocols for formation and measurement of low adhesion conditions using leaf layers.
