CASE STUDY 3: Top of rail friction management (Wayside application)

Background

Benchmark tests of a friction management products. The products are designed for wayside application to either increase or decrease friction and applied as a ‘puddle’. A train rolls through this puddle and product is picked up and re-deposited or ‘carried down’.

Our practices

  • Dry baseline values measured before product application

  • Representative ‘puddle’ of product applied

  • Test sites marked out, one every wheel circumference

  • Train rolls through product, which is picked up by wheels and re-deposited

  • Friction measured at sites of re-deposition
